Proudly representing his Puerto Rican heritage, Joshua “JJ” Pagan is rapidly establishing himself as a major force in the lightweight division, fighting out of Grand Rapids, Michigan—the hometown of the legendary Floyd Mayweather. Pagan built an elite foundation in the amateurs as a 3X Michigan Golden Gloves State Champion and the 2021 USA Boxing National Champion. Since turning professional, his career skyrocketed following a high-stakes, breakout performance against Maliek Montgomery for the vacant WBO NABO Lightweight Title. The bout proved to be a grueling, high-intensity war that drew massive attention to Pagan’s skill set; utilizing precise counter-punching and sharp angles, Pagan opened a severe laceration over Montgomery’s left eye in the second round, adjusting his tactical output to consistently target the injury until a decisive right uppercut in the ninth round forced a doctor’s stoppage. Now reigning as the current, undefeated NABO Lightweight Champion, Pagan has successfully defended his regional strap twice via dominant 10-round unanimous decisions against veteran challengers Bryan Jimenez and Rodolfo Bustamante Salazar. Currently holding the #8 spot in the WBO world rankings, the Michigan native is hunting for world title opportunities and actively targeting matchmaking showdowns with fellow elite prospects Abdullah Mason and Floyd Schofield. Outside of the gym, Pagan famously enjoys fueling his grueling training blocks with Snickers bars and Little Caesars Pizza, and he openly jokes that he’s just waiting for either brand to finally step up and sponsor him.

Pitch Angles (Media Hooks)

  1. “Homecoming in Puerto Rico” / Diaspora Drama
Promote Pagan headlining in San Juan (Oct 23, 2025 vs. Montgomery). Emphasize returning to roots, fighting in his ancestral land, carrying the Puerto Rican torch. Tap into pride, Puerto Rican boxing lineage (Cotto, Tito, etc.).
Hook line: “From Michigan to San Juan — JJ’s fight is a journey home.

  2. Legacy & Tribute Story
Focus on his grandfather, the late Gonzalo Pagan, Sr., whose support shaped him. The act of kissing his grandfather’s arm in the Rhodes fight is a powerful image. Use this as emotional anchor — a fighter driven by familial love, not just winning belts.

  3. The Student of Legends
Sell the angle: “He doesn’t just fight — he studies.” Pagan watches endless tape of De La Hoya, Cotto, Trinidad, Benitez — and blends styles. That gives him an unpredictable edge. Frame him as the cerebral boxer in an age of brute force.

  4. Undefeated, On the Rise, Hungry for the Big Stage
He’s young (born Jan 8, 2000 per Fox Sports) and undefeated. FOX Sports Use that: “The next big name in 135 lb boxing you haven’t heard of — yet.” Position him as underdog in mainstream eyes, but with metrics to back him up.

  5. Detroit / Michigan Local Hero Story
Lean on regional pride. He’s Michigan-based, fights often in Detroit, draws a local fan base. Pitch to Detroit, Grand Rapids papers, radio: “Our hometown champ making waves nationally.”

  6. Crossroads Fight: Style vs. Power / Tactical Test
Use upcoming fights to tease style matchups. E.g. if Montgomery or opponent is a knockout puncher, frame it: “Will JJ’s boxing IQ survive vs. a slugger?” Or “Can he impose his style on a brawler?” That gives the media something tactical to dissect.

  7. Puerto Rican Legacy + Next Generation Link
Tie Pagan into the lineage: Cotto, Tito Trinidad, Benitez — link him as the next torch-bearer for Puerto Rican boxing. Include the migration story (grandparents came in ’60s) to emphasize multi-generational journey.

  8. Crossover / Lifestyle Tie-In
Use off-ring life (faith, training discipline, etc.) for features outside pure sports: e.g. “A day in the life of Double J,” or how he balances life in Michigan and Puerto Rican identity. Human interest stories.

  9. “Battle Tested” Moment
Use the anecdote from that Detroit fight: opponent wanted to brawl — Pagan stayed composed, waited, then uppercut KO’d him. It’s a microcosm: composed vs. chaotic, brain vs. brute. That moment is a tight, visual narrative you can pitch as a turning point story.

  10. “Title-Chasing Teen to 20s Journey”
Chart his evolution: amateur champ, USA Boxing National Champ, turning pro, securing regionals, now pushing toward national/regional belts. Frame it as a long game — “The patient rise of Double J.”
