Edith Soledad “Itaka” Matthysse is an Argentine professional boxer born August 6, 1980, in Rafaela, Santa Fe — and boxing is genuinely in her blood. She is the older sister of former WBC welterweight world champion Lucas Matthysse and sibling to Walter Matthysse, both accomplished fighters in their own right. Their father, Mario “El Tordo” Matthysse, was a professional boxer who fought 58 bouts, and their maternal grandfather was also a boxer. Edith began visiting local gyms as a teenager, drawn in by the family tradition, and turned professional at age 26 in 2007. She stands 5’5″, fights orthodox out of Trelew, Chubut, Argentina, and has competed across bantamweight, super bantamweight, featherweight, super featherweight, and super lightweight throughout a career that spans nearly two decades.

Her professional résumé is one of the most battle-tested in women’s boxing. She held the WBA Women’s Featherweight title from 2013 to 2016, then unified it with the WBC Women’s Featherweight belt in 2015 with a unanimous decision over Jelena Mrdjenovich — becoming a two-belt world champion. Over the course of her career she has faced some of the sport’s best, including Marcela Acuña, Jackie Nava, Alycia Baumgardner, and Mrdjenovich in multiple fights, competing in approximately 15 title fights across her career and never once being knocked out. Every loss on her record has come by decision — a testament to her durability and iron chin across more than 35 professional bouts.

On February 22, 2026, at 45 years old, Matthysse delivered one of the most remarkable performances of her career. On the undercard of Claressa Shields vs. Franchon Crews-Dezurn II at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, she faced American contender Samantha Worthington for the WBA Women’s Super-Lightweight title. Using veteran ring IQ, sharp counterpunching, and calculated body work, she dominated the fight from the opening bell — breaking Worthington down steadily through eight rounds until Worthington’s corner retired their fighter before the ninth round. The stoppage came at 2:00 of Round 8, giving Matthysse a TKO victory and the WBA super lightweight world title. At 45, she is now a world champion again — making her one of the oldest women ever to win a major world title in professional boxing and adding a second weight class to a legacy that already places her among the best Argentine female fighters in history. Now 21-16-1, “Itaka” is proof that experience, heart, and ring intelligence never expire.
